Tether’s 150,000-Bitcoin Claim Conflicts With Reserve Report’s Implied 100,000 BTC

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said at the Plan ₿ Forum in Lugano that the company holds “give or take 150, 000 Bitcoin.” Yet Tether’s third-quarter reserve report lists $8.37 billion in Bitcoin, a figure that works out to roughly 100, 000 BTC at the price stated in the report. The published figures do not explain the difference.

  • Ardoino’s estimate: about 150, 000 BTC, with no wallet breakdown or acquisition schedule.
  • Reserve report: $8.37 billion in Bitcoin at September 30, 2026, implying roughly 100, 000 BTC.
  • Reported cushion: $7.95 billion in excess reserves, up from $4.11 billion at June’s end.
  • Broader ambitions: Tether says its initiatives cover energy, mining, wallets, communications and AI.

Two Bitcoin figures, with no published reconciliation

At the Bitcoin price of $83, 621.23 in Tether’s third-quarter reserve report, $8.37 billion equals about 100, 000 BTC. Using the same price, 150, 000 BTC would be worth approximately $12.54 billion, about $4.17 billion more than the reported Bitcoin reserve line.

That gap does not prove Ardoino’s estimate is wrong. The reserve line might exclude Bitcoin held elsewhere in Tether’s corporate structure, but the published figures do not confirm that. Tether has not provided a wallet list, an entity-level breakdown or an acquisition schedule to explain how the two figures fit together.

The distinction matters. Ardoino described the company’s estimated corporate holdings, while the BDO report gives a valuation for Bitcoin reserves. Without a clear explanation of what that reserve category includes, readers cannot assume both figures cover exactly the same BTC, or treat them as a match.

Tether adopted a policy in May 2023 to allocate part of its profits to Bitcoin. That helps explain its interest in accumulating BTC, but it does not tell us how many coins the company holds or where they are kept.

Tether’s reserve cushion grew in the third quarter

Tether published its third-quarter attestation on October 30. Prepared by BDO, it reported total reserve assets of $191.45 billion and liabilities of about $183.50 billion as of September 30, 2026. That left $7.95 billion in excess reserves, up from $4.11 billion at June’s end.

Total assets rose by about $3.70 billion during the quarter, while liabilities fell by roughly $140 million. Both changes helped widen the cushion. The figures reflect the reported value of assets as well as the amounts held. A higher dollar valuation does not necessarily mean Tether acquired more of an asset.

The Bitcoin figures show why that distinction matters. Its reported value rose from about $5.80 billion at June’s end to $8.37 billion at September 30. Unchained estimated that the rise in Bitcoin’s price added about $2.47 billion to the value of Tether’s holdings. That is an estimate based on reserve values and market prices, not a published wallet inventory.

Tether reported $122.84 billion in directly held U.S. Treasury bills and $9.52 billion in overnight reverse repurchase agreements, for a combined exposure of about $132.36 billion. In a reverse repurchase agreement, one party provides cash against securities and agrees to reverse the transaction later. The report also listed $19.08 billion in gold and $14.18 billion in secured loans.

Excess reserves are the reported difference between assets and liabilities, not cash sitting in a bank account. Tether’s assets include instruments with different structures and liquidity, and the cushion can shift as asset values and liabilities change. A larger buffer is a positive reported change, but it cannot guarantee protection against every market shock.

Attestation figures and profit claims are not the same measure

An attestation covers specified information at a particular point in time. BDO’s report gives a reasonable-assurance opinion under ISAE 3000 (Revised), a standard for assurance work on information other than conventional financial statements. Its scope should not be taken to mean BDO audited every part of Tether’s business or verified every public claim.

Tether reported $1.5 billion in third-quarter net operating profit and $4.5 billion for the first nine months of 2026. The BDO report lists a nine-month “financial result” of $1.66 billion. Those figures have different labels, and the published information does not explain their definitions or show that they can be compared directly. They should remain separate rather than being treated as competing totals for the same measure.

Tether said USDT issuance remained near $184 billion during the first nine months of 2026. BDO’s report lists about $183.47 billion in tokens issued at September 30. Treasury-related income contributed to Tether’s earnings, tying some of its financial results to the yield on its holdings.

Tether’s “Independence Stack” spans more than finance

Ardoino uses “Independence Stack” to describe Tether initiatives in energy, Bitcoin mining, communications, self-custody wallets and artificial intelligence. The goal, he says, is to give communities more ways to operate without depending entirely on centralized service providers. It is an ambitious goal. Whether the projects deliver lasting independence will depend on their design, security, access and continued support.

Ardoino said about 5, 000 solar-powered battery kiosks serve two million users and support 30, 000 women working within the network. Tether plans to reach 100, 000 kiosks over five years, potentially serving 200 million people. These are company claims. The information provided does not include detailed methodology, operating locations or independent verification.

In October, Tether said 15 mining companies, manufacturers and pools had backed its open-source Mining Development Kit. The named participants include Bitmain, Bitdeer, Canaan, MicroBT, Foundry Digital and F2Pool. Industry support can help a project gain traction, but an announcement alone does not prove broad adoption.

In September, Tether and Shiga announced plans for self-custodial wallets for individuals and institutions in Africa and the Gulf Cooperation Council. The proposed wallets are intended to support USDT, Bitcoin and Tether Gold. No launch date was announced. A self-custodial wallet lets users control their own assets rather than handing custody to a company. That control also leaves users responsible for protecting their keys and choosing secure software.

Tether also said it released an offline speech-recognition model in October for smartphones, smart glasses and robotics. Ardoino cited translation tools covering 19 African languages and medical AI models with 1.7 billion and four billion parameters. A model’s parameter count indicates its scale, not its accuracy or usefulness. Performance results and independent evaluation would offer more meaningful evidence.

For all these initiatives, the real test is whether the tools stay secure, maintained and accessible over time, not just whether they are announced. Tether’s scale gives its projects resources and reach. It also makes transparency about their results and limitations all the more important.

Key questions and takeaways

  • How much Bitcoin did Ardoino say Tether holds?

He estimated “give or take 150, 000 Bitcoin.” BDO’s September 30 report lists $8.37 billion in Bitcoin reserves, which implies roughly 100, 000 BTC at the report’s stated price. The published figures do not explain the gap.

  • Is USDT backed only by Bitcoin?

No. Tether’s reported reserves include a range of assets, including Treasury bills, reverse repurchase agreements, gold and secured loans. Bitcoin is one reported reserve category, not the full backing.

  • Did Tether’s excess reserves increase?

Yes. The reported difference between assets and liabilities rose from $4.11 billion at June’s end to $7.95 billion at September 30. That figure is not a cash balance.

  • Are Tether’s kiosk reach and user figures independently verified?

The kiosk figures and claims of more than 730 million users and about 30 million new wallets each quarter come from Ardoino or Tether. The information provided includes no independent verification or enough detail to assess how users and wallets are counted.

  • Are the planned Tether, Shiga wallets available?

No launch date was announced. The proposed self-custodial wallets are intended for users in Africa and the Gulf Cooperation Council and will support USDT, Bitcoin and Tether Gold.

Tether reported substantial reserves and Bitcoin exposure, and its reserve cushion grew in the third quarter. But the headline holding estimate is hard to assess without a clear breakdown. Until Tether explains how Ardoino’s estimate of roughly 150, 000 BTC relates to the roughly 100, 000 BTC implied by the reserve report, the published figures leave the gap unresolved. Tether’s USDT seizure lawsuit is another reminder that reserve figures do not answer every question about the issuer’s broader risks.
